Common Numbering Pilot Project
Beginning in October 2006, the Joint Conference Committee (JCC), which consists of representatives from the Arizona Board of Regents and the Arizona Community College Association, has been working with ATASS staff on the idea of a common numbering system (CNS) for Arizona. This work has included (1) the review of six states with a common numbering system (Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, and Texas), (2) an examination of the top 25 FTSE generating courses, and (3) an analysis of the common numbering which several Arizona ATFs have been pursuing for many years.
Based upon this work, at the May 21, 2008 JCC meeting, ATASS staff were charged with conducting a common numbering system pilot project to begin in the fall of 2008. This project acknowledges the crucial role of faculty and the historical precedence of using ATFs as a vehicle for common numbering. As a “pilot” project, the focus is on approaching those ATFs whose courses either appeared in the top 25 lists or which are known as “high volume/high traffic” courses used in transfer and articulation. The plan approved by the JCC includes 21 ATFs and 51 courses to be considering for common numbering.

To see the letter from the APASC co-chairs to the 21 ATF chairs about this project, go to the “Memo” link below.
A power point presentation was developed for the 21 ATF chairs to provide background information about this project; it is available at the link below. These are the three materials that were sent to the involved ATF chairs, in late summer, providing more specific information about the project. You are welcome to review them.
Templates
Twenty-one discipline-specific templates were developed to assist faculty in this pilot project; their links are below. A template for institutions was also developed: it is also listed below as CNS Template Institutional.
