ARIZONA GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM


The AGEC is the foundation of a community college education in Arizona. Successfully completing the AGEC means all AGEC courses will transfer as a block to ASU, NAU and UA. If the AGEC is completed with a 2.5 GPA or better, the student is guaranteed admission to ASU, NAU, and UA.

ABOUT THE AGEC


The AGEC consists of 35-37 credits in the following subject areas:

  • Freshman Composition
  • Mathematics
  • Arts & Humanities
  • Social & Behavioral Sciences
  • Physical and Biological Sciences
  • Options (these will vary by community college and AGEC completed)
  • Special Requirements (upon completion of your AGEC, you will have taken courses that meet the following requirements: Intensive writing and critical inquiry, Ethnic/Race/Gender Awareness, Global/International or Historical Awareness)

AGEC CONCENTRATION OPTIONS

There are three AGEC blocks– AGEC-A, AGEC-B, and AGEC-S. Students complete an AGEC that is appropriate for their major.

AGEC-A

FOR LIBERAL ARTS MAJORS


The AGEC-A is a 35 semester-credit lower division general education curriculum block that fulfills the lower division general education requirements of liberal arts majors (e.g., social science, fine arts, humanities). The block will transfer without loss of credit from any Arizona public community college to any other Arizona public community college or university, and is for students who intend to transfer into liberal arts majors.


Examples: English, History, Religion, Philosophy, Communications

Intensive Writing and Critical Inquiry
At least one course after the completion of one semester of the English Composition requirement shall involve the development of competence in written discourse and involve the gathering, interpretation, and evaluation of evidence.


Awareness Areas
1. One course emphasizing ethnic/race/gender awareness is required. Please see the community college catalogs for courses which satisfy this requirement; it is often referred to as the "cultural," or "C" awareness area.

2. One course emphasizing contemporary global/international awareness or historical awareness is required. Please see the community college catalogs for courses which satisfy this requirement; it is often referred to as the "global," or "G" awareness area and the "historical," or "H" awareness area.

FOR BUSINESS MAJORS


The AGEC-B is a 35 semester-credit lower division general education curriculum block that fulfills the lower division general education requirements of business majors. The block will transfer without loss of credit from any Arizona public community college to any other Arizona public community college or university, and is for students who intend to transfer into business majors.

The AGEC-S is a 35 semester-credit lower division general education curriculum block that fulfills the lower division general education requirements of majors with more stringent mathematics and mathematics-based science requirements The block will transfer without loss of credit from any Arizona public community college to any other Arizona public community college or university, and is for students who intend to transfer into majors with more stringent mathematics and mathematics-based science requirements.
